Audio, Made Physical

We design sound and music to capture its highest psychological and physical potential. By applying scientific research, we use audio to push your audience over the fourth wall.

What We Do

We're developing a way of designing and implementing audio using cross-discipline scientific research for films, TV, podcasts, games, and more. The studio's purpose is to bridge the gap between science and art, while integrating the body into immersive experiences. We use our understanding of psychology and physiology to increase the affective realism of media. That means that what your protagonist is feeling, we want to make your audience feel too.The project's first iteration can be heard in the Pilot episode of the Adventures in Capital podcast.2025 welcomes a new work from Astrocyte Studios: The AutonomiCTRL. This device enables the creation of physically engaged sound art by using the body as a controller.

AutonomiCTRL

The AutonomiCTRL turns the body into a controller. Using several biological sensors, physical reactions are measured and relayed to software, where they manipulate audio in real-time. It's an original creation designed, developed, and programmed by Astrocyte Studios, combining concepts from psychology, games design, and soundscape creation.

The AutonomiCTRL was first presented at the dBs MA Innovation in Sound Summer Show in August 2024. The controller has since been used for an upcoming digital performance.

Shav

Shav is a work of sound art that can only be performed with the AutonomiCTRL. The soundscape loops indefinitely, but is subtly - or significantly - different each time, depending on the data inputted. It blends together pure synthesis, field recordings, spoken word, and sampling. Inspired by notions of suburban gothic, the work seeks to explore somatic experiences of generational trauma through a Traveller/Romani lens.

ANSynth

The ANSynth is a synthesiser controlled by biodata. This data is collected and collated by the AutonomiCTRL, allowing the data to control different aspects of a digital synth. You can hear it used in Shav.

The Team

Toni Oisin H.C. is a sound designer and artist with a background in Psychology. He has previous experience creating audio for interactive art installations, radio, podcasts, and music. His research interests lie in psychoacoustics, psycholinguistics, psychophysiology, embodiment, and immersion.

AC Lavender is a contemporary classical composer and mathematician. Their work centres around Welsh folk practices, chiptune, neurodiversity, and video game music. They have experience composing for a range of modern and traditional instruments, as well as for quartets and solo pieces.
